Walmart Transforms Shopping With ChatGPT Integration

Walmart announced a partnership with OpenAI on Tuesday that will let customers shop directly through ChatGPT using the new Instant Checkout feature. The world’s largest retailer is moving beyond traditional search bars to create personalized, multimedia shopping experiences powered by artificial intelligence.

Customers will link their Walmart accounts to ChatGPT and use conversational prompts like “plan a weeknight taco dinner” or “reorder my staples” to discover products. The AI will curate selections, and shoppers can complete purchases with a simple click of the buy button. The catalog includes apparel, entertainment, packaged food, and household essentials from both Walmart and Sam’s Club.

AI Predicts Shopping Needs Before Customers Ask

Walmart CEO Doug McMillon stated that eCommerce is shifting from static search bars to native AI experiences that are multimedia, personalized, and contextual. The company calls this approach agentic commerce, where artificial intelligence learns customer preferences and proactively suggests products rather than simply responding to searches.

The partnership builds on Walmart’s existing AI initiatives. The retailer has already reduced fashion production timelines by up to 18 weeks and cut customer care resolution times by 40% through AI applications. Walmart also launched its own AI shopping assistant called Sparky earlier this year.

OpenAI Expands E-Commerce Footprint

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the company is excited to make everyday purchases simpler through the Walmart collaboration. This partnership marks ChatGPT’s biggest retail deal following initial launches with Etsy and upcoming integrations with over one million Shopify merchants including Skims and Glossier.

OpenAI charges companies a transaction fee for purchases completed through ChatGPT, creating a new revenue stream. The feature will roll out later this fall, with third-party sellers also supported.

Walmart is promoting AI literacy among its 2.1 million associates worldwide by adopting ChatGPT Enterprise for teams and becoming one of the first partners to embrace OpenAI Certifications for employee training.
